Greetings from Mongolia

We have just completed the English Summer Olympics program. I am very proud of my students. They did very, very well. During the final competition each student had to give a speech, be interviewed on an important topic and  teach a 20 minute English lesson based on the training they received during the summer. Three of my students won first, second and third place for their excellent speeches and another one of my students won the Methodology contest. There were 30 Mongolian English teachers participating in the competition. All of my students this year live in the northern part of Mongolia, close to the Russian border. My students were all very superstitious and most go to fortune tellers whenever they have a problem. This area of Mongolia is known for witch doctors and fortune tellers. I did have the opportunity to take 4 of my students to church. Several had never been before and were very open to deeper things. Several of them will be coming back to Ulaanbaatar later this year and I will be meeting with them again. Please pray that God will open the door for me to share more with them at that time. Teachers here in Mongolia are beginning to have the same problems as teachers in the states. Students bully each other, steal from each other, are sometimes rude to teachers and some come to school drunk. One of my teachers told me that when the police pick up a student that is drunk they put them in jail. The teacher is required to go to the jail when the student is sober and pay for his/her release. Then the teacher has to try to collect the money from the parents. Some times the parents refuse to reimburse the teacher.  The teachers must pay for the student's release. If they don't the school takes the money out of their pay check.  It is a very bad situation.
